MASK from the Gimme shelter series

80x100 cm, 2004, acryl on canvas.

The mask from the series ‘Gimme shelter’  is one of four paintings in this series.

In the center of the painting lies a huddled up figure. The person is not completely to be seen. Partly he or she (that is not clear) lies under a sail and in front of the human being hangs another one. The sails are tightened  by ropes. The shadows of the ropes lie across the figure. Is it the shadow or is the person really handcuffed. Perhaps the answer is to be found in the head. The ‘shadow-rope’ that  devides the head is not symmetrical. The face and the rest of the head do not form a unity; both parts are twisted. And that is why the head can be read  as wearing a mask. But will this mask help to hide?

Sometimes it is impossible to protect  yourself, neither physically, nor psycically from threats.
